Surrounding Regions of Fatima


Geographically, Fatima is located in the center of Portugal. It is about 100 km from Lisbon and Coimbra. When in Fatima, one can also visit its beautiful and culturally rich surrounding regions. Visitors will also enjoy the beaches, monuments, grottos, museums, hot springs, parks, etc...

Here are some places worthy to see near Fatima:

  • Grutas - a place known for its natural and beautiful grottos. Some of the most visited grottos here are: Moeda e Fatima, Mira d’ Aire, Alvalados and Santo Antonio;
  • Alcobaça - a historical church and monastery is found here . Being the largest church of Portugal, the Monastery of Santa Maria of Alcobaça has a simple yet elegant medieval architectural design. It was founded in 1178 by the Cistercian Order to accomplish the promise made by the first king of the country, King Afonso Henriques, who wanted to build for these monks an impressive abbey;
  • Batalha - another magnificent church and monastery is worthy to see in this place. The Monastery of Santa Maria de Vitória (XIV – XVI c) has a Portuguese Gothic design. This monastery is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list;
  • Leiria - some of the places to be visited here are: the castle; the Cathedral,; São Pedro's Church, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena and the Shrine of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação;
  • Coimbra - it is here where one finds one of the oldest city university in Europe.. Near the university is the old cathedral and the  Machado de Castro museum. Other historical places here are: the monastery of Santa Cruz; the Igreja do Santiago; the Mosteiro de Celas and the Convento de Santa Clara;
  • Nazaré - this place is ideal for vacation because of its beautiful beaches. One of the famous beaches here is the São Martinho do Porto beach;
  • Óbidos - this town traces back its history on the 13th century during the reign of King Dinis. He gave this town, which was a villa that time, as a gift to her Spanish wife Isabel of Aragon. Obidos maintains its rich history by preserving the old and unique structures of the town;
  • Santarém - this place is considered as the Gothic center of Portugal because almost all the structures  especially the churches are of gothic designs. Santarém is also famous on bullfights. The place also holds annual agricultural fair;
  • Ourém - this is the capital of the municipality of Fatima. One can see here the medieval walls and fences; churches especially Igreja da Colegiada and a historical castle;
  • Tomar - the Convento de Cristo is the pride of Tomar. It is a 12th century castle that has a monastery founded by the Order of Templars. The church of the monastery has a magnificent design. The Charola, another octagonal church of the Templates was just restored and renovated recently;
  • Pegadas de Dinossauros - ten kilometers from fatima, in this place, one can see footprints of dinasours specifically footprints of Sauropods. These are one of the biggest animals that ever existed;
  • Termas - another suitable place for relaxation. Termas is known for its waters coming from the mountain. These waters have been proven good for the human body and health.
As you can see, there are plenty of interesting sites in Fatima and in Casa Verbo Divino.
